Green steel
Say goodbye to a major polluter. Our near-zero emission steel will be the greenest ore-based steel produced at scale.
What is green steel?
Green steel is steel produced with green hydrogen and renewable electricity instead of fossil coal. We reduce iron ore to sponge iron via a hydrogen‑based direct reduction process powered by renewable electricity. The sponge iron is then combined with steel scrap in an electric arc furnace, melted into molten steel, and rolled into a variety of strip steel products. Using green hydrogen that we will produce on site allows us to dramatically cut CO₂ emissions while preserving the same high quality.
How we produce our green steel
Do we really need green steel?
In an ideal world, we wouldn’t need newly produced, iron ore-based steel. In the coming years, however, there will not be enough recycled steel scrap to meet global demand for steel. To meet demand, ore-based steel will be needed. That’s also where we have the potential to reduce emissions the most – by turning off coal-fueled blast furnaces and instead reducing iron ore with green hydrogen. At Stegra, we are making it happen, near-zero aligned and at scale.
Green hydrogen enables the decarbonization of steel
By powering the transition to emission-free industries, green hydrogen plays a key role in fighting climate change. At Stegra, we will use green hydrogen to decarbonize heavy industries – starting with steel, which alone accounts for 25% of Europe’s industrial emissions.
