Stegra, the Port of Narvik and Kaunis Iron have decided to jointly explore the possibility of a future pelletizer capability in Narvik.

The agreement – a Memorandum of Understanding – outlines that the conditions for establishing a pelletizing plant at the former airport in Narvik, near the current Port of Narvik, will be further investigated.

The agreement is one of the tracks Stegra is looking into for a long-term local supply of direct reduction (DR) pellets, which will further reduce the climate footprint from its plant in Boden, where the company will produce green iron and green steel in addition to green hydrogen.

In the longer perspective, there is an increased demand for DR pellets in the green transition of the global steel industry. With this collaboration, we at Stegra are looking forward to exploring the possibilities together with our partners, Narvik municipality/Port of Narvik and Kaunis Iron to secure a potential strong local supply of DR pellets.
