Stegra commits to LESS aisbl as standard for transparent low-emission steel labelling in the EU

Swedish steel innovator Stegra, renowned for its commitment to sustainable steel production and cutting-edge technologies, has officially joined LESS aisbl (Low Emission Steel Standard).

LESS aisbl was established to create a unified standard and credible label for low- and near-zero emission steel. Its approach is grounded in the belief that the path to climate-neutral steel must be transparent, comparable, and inclusive of all production technologies. By setting clear benchmarks, LESS enables measurable progress and accelerates the industry’s transition toward decarbonisation. Today, LESS aisbl members represent approximately 45% of Europe’s steel production.

Niklas Wass, Head of Boden Operations at Stegra, emphasized the importance of joining:

“We are building a company that will only produce steel with close to zero emissions from day one. For us, a credible and transparent label like LESS is essential to demonstrate the decarbonization level of our products and to enable access to future-oriented markets. We believe LESS should be adopted as the official EU-label for low and near zero emission steel.”

Dr. Carmen Ostwald, Secretary General of LESS aisbl, welcomed Stegra’s membership:

“Stegra brings both technical excellence and a strong sustainability vision to our community. Their participation reinforces our mission to build a harmonized framework for low-emission steel and to accelerate the sector’s transition toward climate neutrality.”

Stegra’s entry comes at a pivotal moment for the steel industry, which faces mounting pressure to reduce carbon emissions while maintaining competitiveness and resilience. By joining LESS aisbl, Stegra reaffirms its commitment to innovation, transparency, and collective progress.
