Electric Arc Furnaces are taking shape

EAF Stegra

Two of the most central pieces of equipment in our steel mill are now taking shape. A few weeks ago, installation began of our two Electric Arc Furnaces (EAFs) — a key part of the process that will turn iron into steel.

Inside the EAFs, iron is melted into liquid steel at temperatures above 1,600°C. Powerful electrodes generate the intense heat required, while the chemistry of the melt is carefully controlled to give the steel the right properties.

The green steel process

Powered by renewable electricity and using hydrogen-reduced iron, the two furnaces will sit at the heart of our steelmaking process. There is still work to be done before they are ready for operation, but the installation is an important part of bringing the steel mill together.
