Today Stegra started construction at its site in the port area in Luleå.

Already in 2023, the Port of Luleå and Stegra, signed an agreement that meant Stegra chose Luleå as the main node for logistics and transport of the input goods and products that will go to and from the new steel mill in Boden. In July 2025, this is solidified as the two parties signed agreements for a logistics solution and a lease in the port area of approximately 75,000m2. This area will house a transport and a storage facility which will handle materials including scrap, iron ore pellets, hot briquetted iron and various by-products.

The agreement between the Port of Luleå and Stegra enables the expansion of the railway in the port and a lease where Stegra itself invests in infrastructure for transshipment and storage of material and goods that will be shipped to and from the steel mill in Boden.

Anders Dahl, CEO at Port of Luleå, is positive that construction of the site now begins.

“For us, this shovel in the ground is a milestone that takes us one step closer being an important infrastructure node for the industrial transition in northern Sweden. A good collaboration with Stegra over several years has made this possible. Together with the expanded railway we will soon have the entire logistic solution in place to handle increased amount of goods in the port”.

The expansion of the Port of Luleå is one of the largest infrastructure projects in Sweden. Within a few years, the plan is for the Port of Luleå to have the capacity to transport up to four times as much cargo as today, receive four times as much ship traffic and be ready to handle completely new types of goods.

"Due to the proximity to Boden, the Port of Luleå is our first choice and we have worked together for almost four years. We have had a close and good dialogue which has led to concrete agreements that mean that the railway in the port is being expanded to be able to handle the large amounts of goods that are going to and from our steel mill in Boden. This also means that we can now go full speed ahead with our own infrastructure investments in the port," says Jenny Marin, Logistics Manager at Stegra.
